Quality Cake Company strives to be as sustainable as possible. Our policy is set out as guidelines for our staff to adhere to and for others to see our working guidelines and goals.

General Guidelines

Wherever possible we aim to:

  • Integrate sustainability considerations into all business decisions.
  • Work with other sustainable businesses.
  • Ensure that products and services are responsibly sourced.
  • Comply to the highest possible standard with all applicable food hygiene legislation and guidance.
  • Actively ensuring all our employees are alert to and encouraged to work in an environmentally considered manner.

Energy

  • Lights and equipment are switched off when not required and heating controls are accurately set.
  • We have replaced as many lights as possible with LED and energy-saving bulbs. No lights are left on overnight.
  • Surplus heat from our ovens is used to heat the bakery in winter.
  • Delivery routes are carefully planned to minimize fuel consumption.
  • Our dishwasher is only run when full.
  • Computers go into sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity and are turned off at the end of the working day.
  • We buy energy-efficient equipment whenever older equipment is retired.
  • We have a smart meter in place to help with energy consumption.
  • Deliveries are limited to 30 miles from the shop to reduce carbon emissions.

Waste Reduction

  • We communicate, invoice, do our banking and store documents electronically as much as possible.
  • Our new till sends receipts via SMS or email to reduce paper waste.
  • Paper is re-used for scrap and notes if double-sided prints are not possible.
  • Wastepaper, card, plastics, metals, glass, batteries, and ink cartridges are recycled using licensed waste carriers where possible.
  • Avoiding single-use plastics – replacing plastic balloon straws with card tubes, and plastic dowel supports for bamboo.
  • Sourcing unpackaged balloons where possible to cut down plastic packaging.
  • Reusing stationery and packaging materials from deliveries.
  • Donate or repurpose unsold products: e.g. Networking / Selling Cake Pops & Tubs of Joy
  • In line with The Environment Act 2021 we are moving closer to having separate disposal of food waste
  • Buying stock in bulk as much as possible to reduce packaging waste and the number of deliveries.
  • Participation in the TerraCycle recycling scheme to reduce balloon waste going to landfill.

Packaging and Materials

  • Packaging: we are aiming for all our packaging to be 100% recyclable and ideally compostable where it doesn’t affect the perishability of our product.
  • Piping bags are reusable/compostable.
  • Wooden spoons/forks are used in place of plastic.
  • Cake boards and boxes are an essential part of cake packaging, providing support and protection to the cake during transportation and storage. Sustainable cake boards and boxes are typically made from recycled cardboard or paper.
  • When delivering wedding cakes, we deliver unboxed or utilise reusable boxes.
